Education

Dave Mays Automotive has provided work experience for high school students (mentoring), on the job training for Job Corps trainees, and employment for co-op students in the SFC AS degree program for more than 30 years.

Dave has served as an independent evaluator for the Ford Motor Company consumer appeals board and the Better Business Bureau. Here, customer complaints were given a “second opinion” evaluation by Dave personally, and in most cases, resolution was favorable to the customers with Ford and unfavorable to those with the BBB.

Dave has been involved with the curriculum development committee for automotive training (core and autotronics programs) conducted by the University of South Florida. Site visits and evaluations of high school, community college and vocational automotive training centers throughout the state helped provide Dave with a valuable perspective into our industry.

Santa Fe College

Dave has personally served as the automotive advisory chairperson for Santa Fe College (formerly Santa Fe Community College, SFCC) two-year AS degree program. This prepares students for the real world through co-op work experience in local dealerships and independent businesses. Dave was instrumental in the formation of the ASA Gatornationals Booster Scholarship fund for monetary assistance to students in the automotive program at SFC.

Industry Involvement

Dave Mays was the first ASA (Automotive Service Association) member in Alachua County; served as chapter president numerous times, as well as state ASA board mechanical VP in 1984. In the 1980s and 1990s, our chapter sponsored industry trade shows and attended numerous legislative visits to Tallahassee to lobby for ASA positions on seatbelt regulations, repair shop licensing, vehicle inspections and vehicle emission testing, to name a few issues. Over the years, the importance of the Florida ASA has diminished with the emphasis switching to a more national presence. The Alachua-Marion County ASA remains as the only regularly meeting active chapter of ASA in the state of Florida.
